  • The Key to Optimal Health: Understanding Nutritional Deficiencies

    by Heather Gunn | November 27, 2018

Why do we get sick? Can we blame it on age? Is it because a co-worker or family member shared their germs? Maybe it’s because we are genetically at risk? Each of these factors has some influence on your wellness, but the bigger influence may be your micronutrient status, including nutritional deficiencies. • Washington Capitals Use Micronutrient Testing to Improve Performance

    by Paula Gallagher | January 12, 2016

joewithpuckEven if you aren't a hockey fan (how could you not be?), you might still know that the Washington Capitals are at the top of their division and are leading the National Hockey League in points.

They have great players, coaching and development, but Coach Barry Trotz also sees the value of using sport-science as an advantage. When one player was feeling run down, he had a blood analysis done and made adjustments to his diet. When his performance improved based on the results from the blood work, all the Capitals players were asked to do the testing.

Along with a micronutrient test, which reveals vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormone and adrenal testing where also done. Personalized recommendations were made for each player based on the results. The reasoning for the testing is that stabilized micronutrient and hormonal levels could help the Capitals players recover better after games during a lengthy season and potentially prevent injuries. • The Key to Optimal Health: Understanding Nutritional Deficiencies

healthy-familyWhy do we get sick? Can we blame it on age? Is it because a co-worker or family member shared their germs? Maybe it’s because we are genetically at risk? Each of these factors has some influence on your wellness, but the bigger influence may be your micronutrient status. Micronutrients are the small compounds we identify as vitamins and minerals and include vitamins A, C, D and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc. Everybody needs them and everybody should be getting their own required amount of them. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has given us a system of nutritional recommendations to follow for wellness, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration now monitors these guidelines. Their purpose is to inform us on how much nutrition a normal, healthy person needs to be healthy... but these guidelines are very general. Some questions that should be asked are, “What does a normal, healthy person look like?” and “Does every normal, healthy person need the same amount of nutrients?”  Read more

  • SpectraCell’s Genetic Testing

    by Margo Gladding | February 13, 2013

I recently wrote a blog about the great discounts that SpectraCell is offering on their Micronutrient test (for a limited time only $88) and Complete Cardiovascular panel (for a limited time only $30). If you are still interested in getting these tests done, the good news is that there is still time to receive these discounted rates.

In addition to the tests listed above, SpectraCell also offers two specialty genetic tests that can provide further insight into your cardiovascular health. One is an Apolipoprotein E genotyping test, which determines an individual’s genetic risk associated with the Apolipoprotein E gene. ApoE is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol and triglycerides, and variants in this gene can have clinically relevant implications for disease risk as well as one’s response to statin therapy, dietary fat, and other risk factors (e.g., smoking and alcohol consumption). Approximately 45% of individuals carry one or more of the high risk variants within the ApoE gene. The results of the genotyping of Apolipoprotein E can have important implications in the treatment strategies for individual patients in reducing cardiovascular disease risk. This test is $35 if you have health insurance.

SpectraCell also offers a test for the MTHFR gene, which is associated with elevated levels of the toxic amino acid homocysteine. Read more

    by Margo Gladding | January 16, 2013

Two of SpectraCell’s most popular tests, their micronutrient test and their comprehensive cardiovascular test, are now available through Village Green at special rates for a limited time. If you have health insurance, the micronutrient test will be $88 (originally $170) and the cardiovascular test will be $30 (originally $80). Because both of these tests require a blood draw, we will be providing a phlebotomist onsite, free of charge, on Fridays from 10-1 pm (with 24-hour notice - see below). If you are interested in this testing but do not live locally in our area, we can ship the test kits to you and provide you with blood draw sites.

If you aren’t familiar with these unique tests, here is a brief overview.  Read more
