Staying Fit and Healthy While Vacationing

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | October 13, 2011

Can you travel and avoid gaining weight?

There are many ways to come home feeling great, but it begins with a plan. You know the saying, “If you fail to plan then plan to fail”? That’s so true with regard to preventing weight gain while traveling.

The first step is to bring healthy snacks for the flight. What’s available in the airport may not be especially health conscious. If you’ll be traveling in the car, same idea applies. Whatever you have is probably healthier than what you’d find at a rest stop.

I also encourage people when traveling to an interesting place to sample the foods of that area. In order to “allow” for the food, give up foods that are ordinary and that you can have at any time.  (more…)

More Reasons to Eat More Fiber

    by Margo Gladding | August 22, 2011

Eating a fiber-rich diet has many health benefits, including supporting cardiovascular health, blood sugar balance, promoting digestive and colon health, supporting weight management, and cholesterol reduction. And now, a recent meta-analysis shows that a high-fiber diet is also associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.

Nutrition and health experts recommend that men and women eat at least 25 grams of fiber daily, if not more. Unfortunately, many people tend to fall short of this suggested amount. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes provide the body with great sources of fiber. These foods provide different forms of fiber (insoluble and soluble) and we need them both for optimal health.

Insoluble fiber (mainly found in whole grains and vegetables) tends to act like a bulking agent and can help speed elimination. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve and therefore can help with the feeling of fullness and aid the body in toxin removal. Soluble fiber (found mainly in legumes, vegetables, and fruits) can help to stabilize blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol by forming a gel-like substance that slows down digestion and the absorption of cholesterol. For the “Serial Dieter”

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | August 2, 2011

If you’re a “serial dieter,” chances are you’ve had your share of disappointments. The fact is that over 95% of people who lose weight on diets gain it back plus more in a relatively short period of time. I’ve worked with hundreds of people who’ve gained weight as a result of dieting and they all wonder why they’ve failed. They’re discouraged, frustrated, and this chronic dieting behavior chips away at their confidence, their self-esteem and their health while doing little to create the body they want.

If you’re like these people, I’ll tell you the same thing I tell them. You didn’t fail, the diet failed you. It failed you because diets don’t work. Diet means deprivation and the more we deprive ourselves, the more we encourage binge type behavior. In fact, dieting is the best way to gain weight! (more…)

Getting To the Root of Your Eating Struggles

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | July 12, 2011

There are so many reasons why we struggle with excess weight. Reasons can be anything from emotional, binge or mindless eating, to a lack of pre-planning and understanding about food choices.

While the reasons are so varied, what’s similar to them all is that they are all created by us. The way we eat, the manner in which we eat, the foods we choose and the triggers which encourage us to eat are all very telling. That’s why it’s so helpful to dig deep and understand the who, what, when, where, how and why of your eating habits as the first step to changing the habits which keep you from achieving the body and health that you want.

Ready? Try to find out which of these areas you need to focus on:

Who triggers you to eat (kids, partner, coworker)? (more…)
