    Are Supplements Safe?

    by Paula Gallagher | November 15, 2011

Every once in a while, a new study comes out implying that supplements don’t work or that they harm. One recent study says that supplements increase mortality.  I don’t believe it for a minute! Proper use of supplements is a safe and important aspect of our lives. Ideally it would be great if we all ate delicious, organic, whole foods at all meals and that we met all our nutritional requirements through diet alone, but the reality is that we don’t. So when a study like this ones come out, discouraging vitamins, it upsets me because for many people it’s the only way they get enough of certain nutrients like calcium, vitamin D and iron. If you would like to learn more about using supplements correctly and to find out what you need on a personalized level, contact us at 1-800-869-9159.

Here is a blog from Dr. David Brownstein. He has a strong opinion about this recent study, and I agree with him. What do you think? (more…)

Is There an Ideal Time to Take Your Supplements?

    by Margo Gladding | August 25, 2011

Customers often ask me if there is an optimal time to take their supplements. With food? Without food? And, they also wonder if there are certain vitamins and minerals that should not be taken at the same time. These are good questions.

In general, vitamins and minerals are best taken with meals in divided doses throughout the day.  Because your body can absorb and use only so much of a vitamin and mineral at one time, dividing the dosage over the course of the day will increase your utilization of these nutrients. The release of stomach acid caused by the presence of food enhances nutrient absorption. And, dietary fats assist in the transportation and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A, D, E, and K. However, several supplements tend to work more efficiently in the body when taken away from food. Examples include, enzymes used to address inflammation, many herbal supplements, and certain probiotics.

I tend not be concerned with nutrients competing for absorption unless you are taking a large amount of one or a few nutrients. If you are taking fiber as a supplement, it is best to take it several hours away from your other nutrients because it can interfere with their absorption. And, if you have been advised to take an iron supplement, take it away from your calcium supplement to ensure that calcium will not inhibit its absorption. (more…)

8 Healthy Habits to Help You Feel Your Best

    by Margo Gladding | June 6, 2011

    1)  Eat a Varied Diet
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, high-quality protein sources, and healthy fats are all rich sources of beneficial nutrients that can nourish and protect your body. Incorporating a wide variety of healthy foods into your diet helps to ensure that you are getting a good range of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and fiber. Rotating foods, so that you are not eating the same things every day can also help to reduce the likelihood of developing food sensitivities. This is an important component of supporting immune and digestive wellness.

    2)  Supplement With Key Nutrients

    • Multivitamin - Even the best diet cannot guarantee optimal nutrient levels. A high quality multivitamin supplement can help to fill in nutrient gaps. Correcting nutrient deficiencies is an important part of preventative healthcare.
    • Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D – Bone is dynamic, living tissue that is continually being renewed. (more…)

Foods That Make You Feel Good

    by Paula Gallagher | October 25, 2010

A friend of mine passed along this article about foods that are good for you and why. Dr. Kayt Haven wrote an article that is full of great advice! Food CAN be medicine – don’t be afraid of healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is not bad for you, eat the yolks, make dark chocolate your treat of choice… Good stuff!

Although I believe that supplementing with good quality vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is important in a world where soil has become deficient of nutrients, and where fast foods places are where many Americans get much of their daily food intake, this article is also a good reminder that good quality food is important for health.  Supplements are just that – SUPPLEMENTS, not REPLACEMENTS.
