    Prenatal Vitamins Linked to Decreased Autism

    Thinking of becoming pregnant? Well, don’t wait until the two pink lines show up on your home pregnancy test to start preparing. It’s important for a woman to start taking a good quality prenatal that contains 800 mg of folic acid as well as iron, calcium and vitamin D3, as soon as she starts trying to conceive (and ideally 3 months before conceiving).

    Prenatal vitamins are specially formulated vitamins that help support a woman’s body during pregnancy. The most important reason in the past to take a prenatal was for the increased amount of folic acid. Folic acid combined with a B group vitamin, not only before pregnancy, but during, significantly reduces the possibility of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. This condition can develop in an embryo very early in pregnancy, perhaps even before a woman knows she is carrying a fetus.

    Flossing Can Affect Fertility

    New research out of the University of Western Australia links oral health to fertility. Flossing, brushing your teeth and seeing your dentist regularly are all important when trying to conceive. The study looked at 3500 women and found that poor oral health causes inflammation and can delay conception by about two months.

    If your gums are pale or bleed when you brush you may already have gum disease. Aside from seeing your dentist, brushing and flossing, a mouth wash or rinse can also be very beneficial. Pathway GUM TONIC is an herbal formula that helps strengthen gum tissue with its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. Ingredients include goldenseal root, bayberry root bark, prickly ash, myrrh gum, and coptis root. Mix 1 dropperful in a small amount of water and rinse. Not only is this formula great for gums, but it is also helpful for painful canker sores too.

    Something must be in the water! There is a small baby boom happening at Village Green Apothecary. Naturopath Dr. Kevin Passero, wife Diane and daughter Lola welcomed son Cooper on May 30.  A couple days later, on June 1, Nutritionist Paula Gallagher, husband Tim and son Joseph welcomed Lillian Maria.

    Pregnant Woman’s Diet Can Affect Childhood Obesity

    A new study published recently in the journal Diabetes has shown that what a woman eats when she is pregnant can affect her child’s risk of obesity, regardless of how fat or thin she is, and what her baby weighs at birth.

    According to Dr. Jill Hamilton, a pediatric endocrinologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, emerging research shows pregnant women with high cholesterol or fatty acid levels are more likely to have children who later become obese and develop type 2 diabetes.

    “Some of these molecules can be transmitted to the baby and influence how the baby develops,” Hamilton said. “It may impact on programming pathways in the brain related to appetite.” (more…)

    Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Gestational Diabetes

    It has been a while since we have had some information on one of our most popular topics, vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin.” A new study out of Australia has shown that there is a connection between low vitamin D levels and gestational diabetes. Vitamin D is one of the important vitamins during pregnancy; researchers recommend that a pregnant woman should regularly get tested for vitamin D deficiency.

    The study involved 147 women at Westmead Hospital’s gestational diabetes clinic. More than 40% of the women had lower than average vitamin D levels at the start of the study. The research was led by Dr. Sue Lynn Lau and Dr. Jenny Gunton from Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research, with Dr. Neil Athayde and Professor Wah Cheung from Westmead Hospital. The researchers noticed that the women with the worst blood sugar control were also those with the lowest vitamin D levels. The findings are published in the latest issue of the Medical Journal of Australia.

    Gestational diabetes carries a whole list of complications including premature labor and birth, blindness, increased risk of both mother and baby developing type 1 or 2 diabetes within 10 years, and a very large birth weight baby (over 12 pounds). Low vitamin D levels can also cause the newborn to have weak bones, which can be broken more easily by a fall during childhood and adulthood.

    If you are pregnant or are thinking of becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor about supplementing with vitamin D3.  I am 32 weeks pregnant and I take 2000IU per day.  It is also something you would want to continue after your baby is born.  If you choose to nurse, you will also need to give your infant vitamin D, as well.
