A friend of mine passed along this article about foods that are good for you and why. Dr. Kayt Haven wrote an article that is full of great advice! Food CAN be medicine – don’t be afraid of healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is not bad for you, eat the yolks, make dark chocolate your treat of choice… Good stuff!
Although I believe that supplementing with good quality vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is important in a world where soil has become deficient of nutrients, and where fast foods places are where many Americans get much of their daily food intake, this article is also a good reminder that good quality food is important for health. Supplements are just that – SUPPLEMENTS, not REPLACEMENTS.

Even with the best diet, you may be deficient in certain nutrients and not even know it. Nutrient deficiencies can result from various health conditions, stress, intense physical exercise, and medications. Research has shown that nutrient deficiencies can suppress the function of the immune system and contribute to degenerative processes, such as arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
How do you know if you are getting the essential vitamins and minerals that you need? A cutting-edge test can provide insight into your nutrient status. It is called a MicroNutrient Test by SpectraCell Laboratories. It measures and assesses long-term intracellular levels of a wide range of nutrients – 32 micronutrients including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. (more…)

Last weekend I drove by a nursery and noticed many people excited to get everything they need to grow a perfect garden. While some held plants, some held flowers, some held seeds and others held gardening tools, these people all shared the same intention, to plant and grow a beautiful garden. Well, that got me thinking…
What does it take for a garden to flourish and thrive? Seemed to me that in order for plants or flowers to thrive, they need many of the same things we do.
Think about it. When planting flowers, we want to plant them on moist, nutrient rich soil, water them frequently, plant them where they’ll receive sunlight, adequate space and in an area that encourages their growth. Now take a look at us. What conditions do we need to grow, thrive and be our best? The moist, nutrient rich soil can be compared to eating healthy food. Are you eating a colorful, nutrient rich, healthy diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and plenty of water? Just as the garden grows best when it has quality nutrients it can absorb, our bodies perform better when we eat quality foods packed with healthy ingredients while hydrating ourselves with enough water. Eating healthy becomes increasingly difficult when you have a little one whose needs seem to come before yours. However, taking care of yourself is crucial because the healthier you are, the better mom you are going to be to your little one. Here are some tips that may make it easier to eat right.
1. Feed your cravings. Be smart about it though – if you crave sweets, try a square of dark chocolate. An ounce of this yummy treat contains heart healthy flavonoids. (antioxidants that fight free radicals that can lead to heart disease and cancer).
2. Eat your water and drink your veggies. I got this great tip from a friend of mine. Basically, eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies, as these will help your body hold onto water longer. Plus you get all the great benefits from them, like fiber, vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. This is especially important if you are nursing. Your body needs to stay hydrated to keep milk flow up. Drink your veggies by using a yummy greens drink. This will not only keep you hydrated, but increase your chances of getting the necessary 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies per day. (more…)
