Even the most conscientious, healthy eaters may have a hard time getting all the vitamins and minerals required to prevent disease and illness. Eating right is the first line of defense against all bugs, but a good multivitamin/mineral can provide some assurance against nutrient deficient diseases like rickets and scurvy. Look for a multivitamin that contains at least 100% of the required daily allowance (RDA) for vitamins A, C, D, E and your B vitamins. Choose one that is iron-free unless you are pregnant, or have been tested for iron deficiency.
Taking a multivitamin more than once per day can help keep water-soluble vitamins in your system longer. Look for one that is designed to take multiple times during the day. Take your multivitamin with meals and a full glass of water to ensure proper digestion.
If you’d like some help picking out the right multi for you, give Village Green a call at 1-800-869-9159.

Probably one of the most commonly used supplements, vitamin C speeds tissue growth and repair, supports hormone production, increases immune system functioning, and protects the body from toxins. It also regulates cholesterol, blood pressure and blood clotting. And vitamin C increases iron absorption and is an important part of our bone make-up.
Although vitamin C deficiency is rare nowadays, thanks to readily available citrus fruits, it can still occur. Signs that you may need to up your intake of this vitamin include bleeding gums, eczema, poor wound healing, weakness; increased colds and flus, as well as easy bruising. Also, you may need to supplement if you use oral contraceptives, antidepressants, analgesics, anticoagulants, steroids or alcohol.
Taking 500mg per day may be a good way to provide your body additional immune support during the cold and flu season. For a more therapeutic dosages, consult with a health care practitioner.

A month ago I wrote about garlic and the immune system. Well, Village Green Apothecary is offering Pathway One-a-Day Garlic at 35% off while supplies last. This is your time to stock up on this immune-boosting supplement. The premium quality Chinese garlic cloves used in Pathway One-a-Day Garlic are naturally grown, hand peeled, and processed to preserve allicin, the key component responsible for garlic’s cardiovascular benefits. An enteric coating is applied to each tablet in order to prevent odor. Each tablet provides a minimum of 6,000 mcg of total allicin potential and all of the natural compounds normally provided by fresh garlic cloves.
Stock up now!

According to Earl Mindell in his book Vitamin Bible, “Zinc acts like a traffic policeman, directing and overseeing the efficient flow of body processes (and) the maintenance of enzyme systems and cells.” So basically, it is involved in most bodily functions.
Zinc is a regulator of the immune system, ensuring that cells for identifying and killing microbes, viruses and cancerous cells are in good working order. Zinc also speeds wound healing and is used for the healing of burns and surgical incisions.
Studies have shown that zinc can protect against flu and colds. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, seniors who took 45mg of zinc had fewer infections than those who took a placebo.
Just be careful – zinc can interfere with the absorption of copper in the long term. So if you are taking zinc for longer than a month, make sure to take 2 to 3 mg of copper a day.

Sterols and sterolins aren’t what most people reach for when supporting the immune system – however, sterols and sterolins do have immune regulating effects. Plant sterols, also known as phytosterols, are healthy plant fats found naturally in cold-pressed or unrefined oils, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains.
Along with helping the immune system, studies have shown that supplementing with these “plant fats” benefits the prostate by increasing urinary flow rate and decreasing pain and burning on urination in men who have benign prostate hypertrophy. They have also been studied as an anti-inflammatory agent and immune regulator in rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, sterols and sterolins stimulate insulin secretion and may contribute to better blood sugar control for diabetics. As more research is done on these molecules, more health benefits are bound to be uncovered.
Although, there are no known contraindications with plant sterols, some studies show a reduction in the carotenes when plant sterols are taken, so it may be wise to make sure that your multivitamin has beta-carotene.
