A study in the journal Cell has found that eating broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can boost the immune system and help you fight off everyday bacteria and viruses.
Lab mice who skipped their veggies for 3 weeks suffered an 80% drop in the total number of protective immune cells.
So, along with these tips, adding a serving or two of veggies to your daily diet may be a good idea for the whole family.

Probably one of the most commonly used supplements, vitamin C speeds tissue growth and repair, supports hormone production, increases immune system functioning, and protects the body from toxins. It also regulates cholesterol, blood pressure and blood clotting. And vitamin C increases iron absorption and is an important part of our bone make-up.
Although vitamin C deficiency is rare nowadays, thanks to readily available citrus fruits, it can still occur. Signs that you may need to up your intake of this vitamin include bleeding gums, eczema, poor wound healing, weakness; increased colds and flus, as well as easy bruising. Also, you may need to supplement if you use oral contraceptives, antidepressants, analgesics, anticoagulants, steroids or alcohol.
Taking 500mg per day may be a good way to provide your body additional immune support during the cold and flu season. For a more therapeutic dosages, consult with a health care practitioner.

I got my first cold last week, no thanks to my little guy, who probably picked it up from one his little friends. This is how it starts – you catch a bug from your kids, who picked it up at daycare or at school, and then you pass it along to your co-workers…and a vicious cycle of sneezing and runny noses starts.
There is little that you can do about what your child does at school or daycare, but there are things you can do at home to build your immune system and protect the spread of these viruses. Every week I have been posting about ways to support your immune system with herbs and supplements, but there are other things that you need to consider as well. At Village Green Apothecary, we have made a Cold and Flu Tips sheet to give you the tools that you need to stay healthy this season. I suggest you share this with family, friends and co-workers. Take note of the most important rule: WASH YOUR HANDS! This is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and other bugs.
Do you have any tips for fighting colds and flus?

My husband came home two weeks ago complaining of a sore throat and fatigue. A few days later, he had a hacking cough and a fever. And just this past week… an ear infection. With a degree in nutrition, and an herbalist and naturopath, as well as countless supplements at my disposal, how did I let my husband develop and continue with what we have now discovered is the flu? Well, every morning I would lay out vitamin C, oscillococcinum, probiotics and tea for him, but being the stubborn, hardheaded man that he is, he thought he could just let the flu take its course. Well, we are on week three of this, Tim is still hacking away and now our poor little 13-month-old son has caught the flu, and he has a double ear infection. Unlike, his daddy, Joe is more open to trying mommy’s remedies. I also want to make clear that Joe is under the care of a lovely doctor who actually approved and is monitoring Joe’s condition.
I am curious to see who will actually feel better sooner, (more…)

Village Green Apothecary’s compounding pharmacist Ron Keech was on ABC News on November 5 talking about the shortage of pediatric (liquid) H1N1 flu vaccine, Tamiflu, and the ability of a compounding pharmacy (like Village Green) to create the liquid version from the more readily-available capsule form.
