Recently, on a popular morning news program, the topic of aging was discussed. I wasn’t surprised that smoking and lying in the sun can make you look years older, but some other habits were a bit more unexpected. For many people, most of these habits can be changed relatively easily and will also help you feel more energized, in general.
1. Not getting enough sleep. Juggling work, kids and a personal life can take a toll on your sleep, but getting enough sleep is important. Research links lack of sleep to high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain, and even just looking tired and older. Aiming for 7 to 8 hours sleep per night is about right for most people.
2. Eating too much sugar. Not only can a diet packed with sugar affect your waistline, but now experts also believe it can make your skin dull and wrinkled, too. (more…)

My lips are taking a beating this winter. The dry, cold air was making them scaly, chapped and sometimes painful. Many conventional lip balms contain chemical ingredients like parabens and petroleum. (Look here to learn about why these are bad). Natural lip balms use safer ingredients and can help soothe those sore, chapped lips.
Here are some good ingredients to look for:
Hempseed Oil: One of my favorites. This oil contains essential fatty acids that hydrate the lips and both seal and coat the lip skin.
Aloe Vera: Especially good for wind-burned lips (think skiers and snow boarders), aloe vera can also ease pain and reduce inflammation.
Vitamin E: This antioxidant helps regenerate vitamin C in the skin cells and helps with collagen formation.
Sweet Almond Oil: A great moisturizer with antioxidant properties to help soothe lips. (more…)

A friend of mine passed along this article about foods that are good for you and why. Dr. Kayt Haven wrote an article that is full of great advice! Food CAN be medicine – don’t be afraid of healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is not bad for you, eat the yolks, make dark chocolate your treat of choice… Good stuff!
Although I believe that supplementing with good quality vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is important in a world where soil has become deficient of nutrients, and where fast foods places are where many Americans get much of their daily food intake, this article is also a good reminder that good quality food is important for health. Supplements are just that – SUPPLEMENTS, not REPLACEMENTS.

I never really understood the concept of fast food, or what we in North America consider fast food. The drive-thru line can be 20 minutes long and that’s before I have ordered, paid or even eaten that greasy burger and 1,000 calorie milkshake. The whole experience can rob me of 30 minutes of my day and I am left wondering if this fast food option was really fast.
Here are a few options that anyone can make at home, and still have time to spare:
AB and H with WG
Prep time: 5 minutes
A twist on the classic peanut butter and jelly. Almond Butter and Honey with Wheat Germ.
Blend until creamy and spread over multigrain bread. This yummy alternative is loaded with calcium, iron, vitamin E and fiber. (more…)
