Many studies suggest that R-lipoic acid may help prevent mitochondrial decay, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, and other disorders associated with aging. Normally made in the body, R-lipoic acid plays a crucial role in the metabolism of both fats and carbohydrates into energy. Plus, it even regenerates other antioxidants like vitamins C and E for longer-lasting effects.
R-lipoic acid is the natural form of lipoic acid and has been shown to be more effective than alpha lipoic acid. Here are some applications for R-lipoic acid:
Glucose Metabolism: Lipoic acid has been used to support healthy blood sugar metabolism. (more…)

Found in many yellow, orange and red fruits and veggies, carotenoids are a class of compounds related to vitamin A. The carotenes include beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin.
Beta-carotene, often used in place of vitamin A for supplementation, is converted to vitamin A in the liver when your body needs it. The beta-carotene that is not converted still has antioxidant power. It protects the body against free radicals which cause damage to cellullar genetic material, causing cancer. Beta-carotene has also been shown to protect the body against environmental pollutants and other substances that lead to aging.
Lycopene is a carotenoid that functions as an antioxidant for the prostate gland and has been shown to help lower the risk of prostate cancer. (more…)

Green tea has many benefits and in a new study out of Sweden, participants noticed increased satiety and fullness after they drank 300ml (just over a cup) of green tea with breakfast. They also reported having a less strong desire to eat their favorite food and finding it less pleasant to eat another mouthful of the same food. Hmmm, I wonder if this works for chocolate?
Here are some other great reasons to drink this antioxidant-rich beverage. Thanks to care2.com for these great points.
1. Green tea is a superb fat fighter. Its active ingredient, EGCG, increases the rate at which fat is burned in your body.
2. It targets belly fat. Research at Tufts University indicates that EGCG in green tea, like other catechins, activates fat-burning genes in the abdomen to speed weight loss by 77%.
3. It keeps energy stable by balancing blood sugar levels. EGCG improves insulin use in the body to prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes that can result in fatigue, irritability, and cravings for unhealthy foods. (more…)

I am a coffee lover. I love the smell of it brewing in the coffee pot in the morning, I love the way it tastes and the way it perks me up in the morning (pun intended). However, I am a three cup (at least) coffee drinker per day, and I know the beating it takes on my adrenal glands, and waistline ( I add sugar and cream to it) … and I know this isn’t good.
So, starting today, I am going to go cold turkey and switch to green tea (I drink it black). The reason I chose green tea is not only because of its health benefits, but because it is also contains caffeine, although only about a quarter of what is found in a cup of coffee. I do need a little caffeine in the morning. According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database compiled by the Editors of Pharmcist’s Letter, green tea may possibly be effective for mental alertness, bladder cancer, esophogeal cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical dysplasia, cholesterol, hyoptension, ovarian cancer, Parkinson’s and weight loss, just to name a few.
