Exercise Leads to Better Night’s Sleep

    by Paula Gallagher | January 31, 2012

If you struggle with getting a good night’s sleep, you may want to add some exercise to your daily routine. We all know that a good night’s sleep is important for overall health. But trying to get some good quality zzz’s remains elusive for many.

There are many drugs and supplements that promise a restful night, and for many these help…but a recent study in  the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity was able to show a direct link between regular physical activity and quality of sleep. Researchers found that mental alertness during the day was also improved.

The study looked at 2,600 men and women, and those that were active at least 150 minutes per week had a 65% decrease in feelings of being sleepy during the day, a 68% reduced likelihood of having leg cramps while sleeping, and a 45% decrease in having difficulty concentrating when tired.

So if you are having a hard time winding down, try incorporating 20 to 30 minutes of walking, running, aerobics or whatever you like, into your day. Sweet dreams!

Stress and Your Skin, Hair, Nails and More

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | January 9, 2012

Someone recently asked: “I’m under a lot of stress and I noticed changes in my hair, skin and nails. Is there any connection?” The answer is a big, fat yes.

One reason for poor hair, skin and nail health is due to over-secretion of the stress hormone cortisol. When it’s over-secreted, it will look to replenish itself by borrowing components from our estrogen stores. Estrogen is a hormone that helps keep us youthful, so when stores become depleted, we age faster. (You know how someone “looks like they’ve had a hard life”? That’s the physical effect of over-secreted stress hormones.)

Another way stress negatively affects hair, skin and nail health is that it deteriorates the skin’s natural ability to protect against invasion. Pollution and toxins are harsh on the skin and alter the way it repairs and regenerates itself. Stress also decreases tone and elasticity of the skin, creating a more aged look.

Increased cortisol can also slow down skin regeneration by slowing the rate of cell turnover, leaving skin dull. While this is happening, adrenaline, which is also released under stress, redirects blood away from the skin to where it’s more needed at the time. This can contribute to a dull look.  (more…)

    Holiday Mojo Series: Food Pushers

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | December 26, 2011

Today’s Holiday Mojo video is about food pushers. We all have them, those well meaning people who push food on us and may (if we’re not careful) sabotage our best efforts at maintaining healthy habits throughout the holiday season. Well, here are a few ideas that may help.

    We Are What We Believe

by Debi Silber, The Mojo Coach | December 1, 2011

    We are what we believe.

Our belief system is formed by the repetition of an idea (a positive or negative idea) from someone we trust.

For example, if someone you trusted repeatedly told you how wonderful you are, you may feel confident in your wonderfulness

If on the other hand, you were told repeatedly how incapable or inept you were, unfortunately you may have grown to believe this too, and over time it may have become your belief as well. Are you surprised then when you go into your adult life, carrying this belief system and living within these limits?

So what do you do now?

Reevaluate these old ideas, discarding the ones that keep you safe, stuck and small while forming a new belief system that serves and supports you!

As you slowly exchange the limiting beliefs that keep you back for a belief system that propels you forward, you’ll soon see the greatness that others see in you.

    Enjoy your day!
