How Eczema Changed My Life … For the Better

    by Naz Amini | March 31, 2010

I took an interesting path to becoming a nutrition counselor at Village Green Apothecary. My story may help others who are suffering from health problems that conventional doctors are unable to help.

About 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with severe eczema. I had rashes all over my body, from head to toe. I wore long-sleeve shirts to cover my rashes, and people would still ask me if I had burned my hands and how it had happened. Every day I suffered from pain, itchiness, headaches, and severe fatigue. Seeing one dermatologist was not enough to take care of my problem, so I decided to consult another dermatologist in the area. I gave up after seeing 6 different dermatologists, who just prescribed different strengths of cortisone cream. I asked each of those doctors if I could take anything internally to help my painful eczema. I was told there was no such thing and got a look as if I were crazy to ask such a question.

Cortisone cream was helpful at first, but as my eczema got worse, nothing would really help. Cortisone definitely wasn’t the long-term solution. Finally, I took a nutrition class at my local community college. It was a very comprehensive class on the basics of nutrition, healthy eating, exercising, and managing stress. One day after class, I asked my professor if she knew of anything I could do nutritionally to ease my eczema. At first I thought she was going to call me crazy too, but instead she asked me questions about my diet and lifestyle. Then, surprisingly enough, she said the only way I would get better would be to take certain supplements that my body seemed to be deficient in, due to my poor diet.

New Exercise Guidelines for Women to Maintain Weight

    by Paula Gallagher | March 30, 2010

Try and find another 40 minutes per day.  A new study that came out last week showed that women in their 40s who exercised at least one hour per day maintained their weight.  So if you are trying to lose weight and can’t figure out why, then you may want to look a little closer at your exercise routine and the amount of time you spend doing it.  Here is a segment from the Early Show that gives you a little more information about the study and some tips to get you moving.

    Achoo! Spring Allergies are Here

    by Margo Gladding | March 29, 2010

Sniffling, runny nose, red eyes… Spring is upon us and along with warmer days and blooming flowers, comes pollen. Pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds sure can take its toll on allergy sufferers. Luckily, there are steps that can be taken to help curb some of these allergy symptoms. Unfortunately, spring isn’t the only time of year that people are plagued by allergy symptoms.  Airborne allergens (dust, pollen, molds, animal dander, etc.) and certain food sensitivities (dairy, wheat, gluten, etc.) can trigger symptoms all year round.

The immune system views allergens as a threat to the body.  When the allergen contacts a mucous membrane, inflammation occurs due to the release of chemicals such as histamine.  It is characterized by redness, itching, swelling and the increased secretion of thin, clear mucous.  Eventually, this can lead to infection as inflammation weakens the immune system. Supporting the body with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, bioflavonoids, vitamins, minerals, and specific herbs and enzymes can help provide powerful allergy and respiratory support.

    Water: Miracle Cure?

    by Naz Amini | March 24, 2010

One of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy from the inside, out is to drink clean, uncontaminated water every day. Water is such a critical component of our health and physiology that if the body doesn’t get enough of it, on a regular basis, damage can occur to tissues, bones, muscles, and blood vessels and can eventually lead to such chronic diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Did you know 75% of your brain and 25% of your bones are made up of water? Drinking water is also the most natural and healthy way to lose weight, burn fat, and suppress your appetite. By drinking 8 glasses of water daily, you can assist your liver in burning stored fat as energy and help your kidneys get rid of excess toxins in your body. This is considered the healthiest way of losing weight: you get to keep your lean muscle mass and get rid of the stored fat. (more…)
